  1. Carol Says:

We have many parents at our elementary school who are extrememly frustrated with Trailblazers: by the lack of wrote memorization of math facts, lack of use of traditional techniques (algorithms) for problem solving. The homework, is far to verbose. The emphasis seems to be not on math or arithmetic, but rather on problem solving and reading. Although problem solving and reading are important, it should not be at the expense of learning facts and algorithms. Without the foundation of basic facts and algorithms, problem solving is much more difficult. The method being used to teach the currriculum does not teach to mastery but touches on an area then revisits that subject at a later time (circular vs. linear fashion) therefore kids don't get an opportunity to master an area of learning – the class just moves forward and teachers hope that by the next time they come around to that subject the students will finally learn the subject. Unfortunately whatever students may have learned the first time, they usually have forgotten by the time the subject matter is revisited. The majority of teachers we talk to do not like the curriculum and often do not use much of the material supplied. They often have to spend a great deal of personal time finding material to supplement what the curriculum fails to provide to meet their needs and the expectations of the town and state. It is time for a change!
