The Margolis family is hosting a fundraiser for St. Francis Hospital and CT Children’s Medical Center on Sunday, May 31st from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave. West Hartford. The fundraiser is in memory of their son Benjamin who passed away in 2007.

Below is a press release from the Margolis family:

May 29, 2007 was a day like any other. A few hours after putting our two- year-old son, Benjamin, to bed, I went to check on him. He wasn’t breathing. I yelled out to call 911 and I started administering CPR. Just a few minutes later, the firemen arrived. They took over for me and carried our son to the ambulance.

Benjamin was sent to two different hospitals that night. He started off at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, where doctors were able to restart his heart. He was then taken by LifeStar helicopter to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Although we were not at St. Francis very long, the time we did spend there, we were treated very well. We were kept informed as to what was happening at all times. They even offered to let either Steve or I go with Ben in the helicopter.

By the time we arrived at Children’s, Benjamin was all ready in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, hooked up to machines and looking as peaceful as could be. Steve and I, along with our other two children, Zac and Nathan, stayed by Ben’s side for the next three days. He passed away on May 31, the worst day of our lives.

We were at Children’s from Tuesday night until early Friday morning. We were lucky to have so many wonderful friends and family who came in and out to visit us during that terrible time. The hospital was so accommodating, letting everyone come in to say their last goodbyes. They also provided us a place to sleep and shower and set up movies for our two older children. Most of all, they provided wonderful round-the-clock care to Benjamin. Not a moment went by when there wasn’t a doctor or nurse with him. That helped to make what were the hardest days of our life a little softer.

Our stay at Children’s was a bit longer because we decided that Ben should be an organ donor. When we finally arrived home, 10-year-old Zac asked what we should do with his baby brother’s toys. That was when we decided to have a tag sale in Benjamin’s memory and donate the money to both St. Francis and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Through two years of tag sales, we raised more than $5000.

This year, we have our sights on an even bigger target: we are holding a silent auction and our goal is $5,000 for this one event.

The fundraiser will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on May 31 at Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., West Hartford. A light supper will be provided by the Olive Garden and a $10 donation is suggested.
