West Hartford Residents Offer Budget Advice

The Town Council and the Board of Education hosted a number of public sessions to seek comments on the budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Town officials got exactly what they asked for: a lot of suggestions. But can they put any of those suggestions to use?

Today is the last day of the fiscal year for the State of Connecticut. July 1st signals the day towns must figure out another way to pay for programs until the state can work through fiscal problems and adopt a budget of their own.

The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities held a press conference today to highlight the problems towns are facing in the absence of a state budget. Many communities will spend money out of their reserve accounts in anticipation of a state reimbursement later.

We caught up with Mayor Scott Slifka at the event to hear how West Hartford plans to address the problem.
